Description of the constraint-induced therapy: Applicability in the clinical context

Introduction: The novel constraint-induced therapy (CIT) has the objective of increasing the use of the paretic limb through restriction of the healthy limbs.

Objective: To analyze the literature on the efficacy and uses of CIT, with especial focus on patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVD).

Development: CIT approach is based on movement restriction of the non-affected patient’s arm or leg, which forces to use the paretic limb during sessions of systematic planned exercises. Therapy sessions involve the patients and the family. CIT can be an efficacious method to restore the function of the affected limbs of patients who present the so-called “learned nonuse” phenomenon, among them, the CVD patients.

Conclusion: CIT is a systematic therapy useful in the rehabilitation process of patients with acquired paresis.

Key words: Cerebrovascular disease, constraint-induced therapy, neurorehabilitation, rehabilitation.
