Resumen

Introducción: Las complicaciones tardías a nivel del sistema nervioso central por radioterapia cada vez son más frecuente, deteriorando considerablemente la calidad de vida del paciente; y no contamos con un tratamiento farmacológico aprobado para el deterioro cognitivo tardío.

Reporte de caso: Se presentó en un paciente que cursa con deterioro cognitivo tardío por radioterapia, un beneficio terapéutico manifiesto con memantina para su disfunción neuro-cognitiva.

Conclusiones: La memantina podría ser útil en el tratamiento del deterioro tardío por radioterapia. Sin embargo, se requiere de información derivada de ensayos clínicos para concluir que la memantina es efectiva en demencia tardía por radioterapia.

Abstract

Introduction: Late CNS complications secondary to radiotherapy are more frequently seen, affecting significantly the patients’ quality of life. There is no approved pharmacological treatment for this type of late cognitive decline.

Case report: We evaluated clinically a patient with late cognitive decline attributed to radiotherapy. A trial with memantine showed benefits on his cognitive performance. A statistical analysis was in use type goodness of fit with statistics chi square, to evaluate the impact of the medicament in this case with cognitive late dysfunction. There was obtained a beneficial not attributable result at random.

Conclusions: Memantine could be useful in the treatment of late cognitive decline due to radiotherapy. However, it is necessary information derived from clinical trials to conclude that memantine is effective in tardive dementia associated with radiotherapy.
